Coastal Protection of Kamares Bay - Sifnos Island

Kamares bay is located in the northwest side of Sifnos Island where the central port facility operates. The port construction, which was initiated back in the 70’s, adversely influenced the shoreline equilibrium causing sediment displacement from the north to the south of “Kamares “beach, exposing coastal properties to erosion. The Municipal Port of Sifnos decided to protect the eroding coastline by placing rock armor to the affected areas. The study was contracted το CNWAY and the construction started in 2008 but was not completed due to permitting problems.

Project Facts:

  • Project cost 8,100 €
  • Upgrading existing protection with rock armor weighing 375 to 625 kg in the eastern part of the eroding coastline for a length of 16m
  • Construction of new protection with rock armor weighing 375 to 625 kg in the western part of the eroding coastline for a length of 46m
