Artificial Reefs are man-made structures placed in featureless sea bottom environments to promote aquatic life and/or recreational diving/fishing opportunities. In special occasions they are built to protect sensitive aquatic habitat from trawling in sea parks or special protected areas.
The successful design of an artificial reef is a delicate task. The design process involves pre-site selection surveys, site selection, materials options, design choices and authorities permitting. In addition the close collaboration of Biologists, Oceanographers and Engineers is also required.
